Tesla Powerwall battery storage

Designing Your System

It is very important that battery storage systems are sized to the time analysed loads of the property, taking into account the output of any PV system as well as any other generating system. We recommend a home energy monitor/smart meter in order to do this – click here for more information.

At Spirit, we are experts in battery storage systems. We continuously analyse the batteries and chargers available on the market, and have in-house software to model both the electrical load and the PV output of a battery system working in combination with Solar PV.

We will design a battery and PV system to maximise on site use whilst minimising the lifetime cost per kWh of stored electricity.

Our Installations

  • Mr A – 6.4 kWh

In May 2016, Spirit commissioned a 6.4 kWh LG Chem lithium ion battery, with a SolaX X-Hybrid inverter/charger to complement the 4 kWp of solar panels installed on the roof.

With a battery, the annual usage supplied by solar to the property is expected to be around 78%, delivering greatly increased electricity savings.

This was the first ever home battery system to be fully approved by SSE!

We are proud to have been at the forefront in getting the DNO (distribution network operator – SSE) to adapt to a new way of thinking and approve the safety of our product before they are installed in homes across the UK . Unlike Solar PV there is no regulatory body to protect consumers, some companies haven’t even bothered to contact the grid – which could prove costly for the home-owner left with a product not fit for purpose.

This represents a step towards de-centralised power in the form of micro generation and power storage will become the future for home owners at a time when grid independence is to become an advantage.

  • Dr R – 3.84 kWh

In July 2016, Spirit commissioned a 3.84 kWh North Star Blue lead acid battery, with a Victron inverter/charger to complement the 8 kWp of solar panels installed on the roof.

With a battery, the annual usage supplied by solar to the property is expected to be around 66%, delivering greatly increased electricity savings.

This was the second ever home battery system to be fully approved by SSE!

This system was retrofitted to an existing solar PV installation using an AC-coupled battery which meant it was very easy and affordable to install.

The Victron inverter/charger is extremely flexible so that when the batteries need replacing it won’t be very costly because the rest of the equipment will remain functional.

The system can also be reconfigured in the future to provide backup from power cuts if that starts to become a problem.

  • Mr A – 6.4 kWh

In October 2016, Spirit commissioned a 6.4 kWh Tesla Powerwall lithium ion battery, to complement the 4 kWp of solar panels installed on the roof.

With the battery, the on-site usage of solar PV has been measured to be on average around 92%, compared to an estimated 62% beforehand. In-depth monitoring is available via a meter which measures electricity flow to and from the battery, solar PV and grid.

This was Spirit’s first Tesla Powerwall installation, following several other successful battery systems. It is a DC-coupled system which means it connects directly to the PV inverter and is the most efficient way to install a battery to a PV system.

“I could not recommend Sprit Solar enough. Highly professional and skilful team. Installing my Powerwall in October was very exciting, and so wanted it done to high standard. Spirit Solar did exactly that, the finished installation exuded care and pride in their work. I had no hesitation in putting my name forward as a very satisfied client. Tesla was informed of their excellent work, as were other members of the Tesla members group.”
