Solar Panel Government Grants
The Government has set targets to reduce the UK's household CO2 emissions by 34% of the 1990 levels in time for 2020*. The Low Carbon Building Programme was the main source of Government grants up until April 2010, but this is now closed to all new applicants. The good news is that there are currently two Government-backed grant schemes which reward renewable solar energy production:
Both of these schemes need to be installed by a MCS accredited installer such as Spirit Solar to qualify for the financial returns.
It is still a small possibility to receive council grants to help with the initial outlay involved in a renewable energy project, but you would need to apply directly to your local council if you wanted to pursue a grant of that nature - they are typically quite difficult to obtain and can require a range of conditions to be met. In contrast, as long as you register with an accredited installer, there are no such difficulties with the FITs and RHI schemes.
Feed In Tariffs & Solar PV Panels Grants
The Feed In Tariff scheme allows you to earn money by selling any surplus electricity back to the national grid, whilst at the same time you will also be paid for the power that you actually use for your home. The FIT scheme uses Photovoltaic Solar Panels (Solar PV), and a full explanation of how they work can be found here:
Renewable Heat Incentive & Solar Thermal Grants
The RHI scheme produces Hot Water rather than electricity, and whilst the details of the scheme are still being finalised by the Government, it will be very similar to the FIT scheme, with rewards for every KW/h of heat you produce and use and additional payments for every KW/h you produce and feed back into the heat network.
Act Now
Now is the time to act if you want to reap the maximum benefits from the Government Grants. The FIT scheme is Tax-free and inflation proof, and the Government are planning to reduce the Feed In Tariff by 9% after April 2012.
If you act now, your Feed In Tariff will be locked in at the higher rate for the entire 25 year payment period - a significantly higher return of investment.
Calculate Your Return
You can calculate your financial returns from the grants on our very own Calculator page. Here you can see both your estimated system output, as well as your Feed In Tariff earnings and the amount you could save on your electricity bill.
