Case Study: Hill View Farm, Wiltshire
In February 2011, Spirit Solar commissioned a 3.68 kWp solar PV system at Hill View Farm in Swindon.
The system is expected to generate 3159 kWh per year, saving 1.762 tonnes of CO2 each year and giving savings / income of £915 per year.

Case Study: Manor Farm Dual Axis Tracker, Northampton
In October 2011 Spirit Solar commissioned a dual-axis tracker system on a farm in Northamptonshire.
As its name suggests, a dual-axis tracker system tracks the sun by rotating about two axes. This ensures that the panels always face the sun.
System output is increased by approximately 33%, relative to a standard untracked system. This particular system consisted of 16 Suntech 245 W panels, giving a system size of 3.92 kWp. The SAP forecast for the system predicted an annual output of 4475 kWh, which is 33% more than the SAP forecast for an un-tracked south-facing system. Note that the system still qualifies for the 'under 4 kWp' tariff band.

Why go solar?
It makes financial sense
- Under the government backed "Feed In Tariff" your farm can earn up to 21.0p for every kWh your system generates. This tariff is guaranteed for 25 years.
- The return on investment from a solar electricity system is over 10% per annum over 25 years.
- In addition to the 21.0p your farm can use the energy generated for FREE, slashing electricity bills and protecting against rising electricity costs.
- If your farm doesn't use the electricity, it will be exported back to the grid, and the farm will receive an additional payment of 3.1p per kWh.
System Position, Size and Indicative Costs
Solar photovoltaic systems can be installed on flat roofs, sloping roofs, or on a ground mounted "A frame". The ideal location is south facing; however any orientation from east to west, through south will produce a good financial return on investment. The panels should if possible be unshaded, although some shading is acceptable.
Farm systems usually start from 4kWp (around 17 panels, requiring a roof or ground space of around 30m2) and go up from there, a typical system being 10kWp (42 panels, requiring a roof space of 75m2). A large system would be 100kWp. Systems can cost anything from £10,000 up to around £500,000 depending on size.
